He was a lifetime member of Peace Lutheran Church and since the age of 97, has been the oldest member of the congregation.Įdwin was also very active with the Senior Citizens Center, enjoyed bowling and was a local league bowler well into his retirement, was a member of The Germans from Russia Heritage Society and a very faithful Minnesota Twins fan. Just as his father had sold land to establish the town, Edwin later sold land that was involved in the development of North Star I and North Star II. Edwin lost Freda in 1985 and remarried two more times, first to Agnes Goetz and later to Tillie Wiedrich, both of whom have passed away.Įdwin was actively involved in the development of Hazen, as was his father before him. They also raised Karen Mattheis as one of their own when she lost her mother at six months of age. Edwin married Freda Mattheis on Jat Zion Lutheran Church in Beulah, ND and the couple raised three children, Sharold, Shirley and Glenn on the farm. Except for a one-year stint during the drought years of the 1930s, Edwin spent his entire life farming and ranching on the family farm south of Hazen that his father established. He attended Hazen Public School through the eighth grade. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Sunday at Barbot Funeral Home, Hazen.Įdwin was born on Septemsouth of Hazen to Benjamin and Lydia (Frank) Oster. Burial will follow at Peace Lutheran Cemetery, Hazen. Services will be held at 10:00 AM CST on Monday, Novemat Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen with Pastor Bruce Grentz officiating.
